Cárcel Escalante stood in front of the mirror, smiling like a fool. Only a day ago, his wife decided he could not be a fool, but he was proving her wrong right now.

His mind was too occupied with Inés’s voice saying, “I’ll never leave you first.” As blunt as ever, all she had said was that she would not leave him if he became less attractive than he is now. But Cárcel’s brain rewrote the narrative to interpret her words as a promise that she would never leave him.

For a man like Cárcel, a one percent decrease in attractiveness would still mean he was superior to anyone’s wildest fantasies. Even after a slight decline, he would still be the most handsome man in Ortega and potentially the entire world, barring any cultural differences in perception of beauty.

Therefore, it logically followed that Inés would not leave him for a slight discrepancy in his appearance. Cárcel nodded to himself. After all, Inés only cares about a man’s face . . .

But how could Inés ever leave Cárcel when they were already married? Even if divorce happened daily among commoners, this freedom did not apply to the nobility, and especially not to the members of Grandes de Ortega. Divorce was a technical possibility but a practical impossibility, like a unicorn or eternal love.

Raúl knocked on the half-opened door. “Lieutenant Salvatore sent a messenger. Apparently, he left something behind, but I could not locate it. What shall we do?”

“If only Salvatore would get divorced . . .” muttered Cárcel.

“Pardon, sir?”

“Never mind me. Just find the item and send it back.” Cárcel took his shirt off and passed it to Raúl instead of his butler, who was standing much closer. Raúl scuttled close and quickly grabbed the shirt.

“But how can I find something that isn’t there . . .?” Raúl looked lost.

Alfonso, on the other hand, nodded as if he knew exactly what to do. “I’ll send him off with something appropriate.”

When Cárcel bobbed his head in approval, Alfonso motioned Raúl to continue with the other duties to tend to Cárcel and left the room.

“So, is it true that Lieutenant Salvatore did not leave anything behind?” asked Raúl.

“Well, you are the one who searched high and low for the item,” replied Cárcel.

“Yes, sir, I did.”

“And you are not a stupid man.”

“No, I am not, sir.”

“Thus, that must mean we don’t have the item here.”

Raúl frowned. “Then, is Lieutenant Salvatore asking us to return something we don’t have?”

Cárcel explained, “Think about it. He’s usually intoxicated all day. He rarely needs another drink because he’s already drunk.”

“If he’s just a rambling drunkard . . . Why are you giving him something?”

“Just sending him something for free is easier than explaining the truth to a drunk man. And I don’t want the messenger to be flogged.” Cárcel shrugged and took the new shirt from Raúl.

Raúl didn’t know how to respond. Even if Cárcel did not care much, the truth was that Lieutenant Salvatore was inadvertently robbing him. Perhaps he’s too lenient with Lieutenant Salvatore . . . Maybe he doesn’t care enough or cares too much about the messenger .
